Breaking the Ice - Outreach & Engagement Programs

Breaking the Ice exposes and educates children, youth and underserved communities in Alaska sharing the benefits of dance and its positive impact despite race, gender or social background.

Breaking the Ice is a living laboratory for dance education, working with diverse community participants throughout the Anchorage area and beyond. ADT is creating long-term partnerships with schools and teachers throughout Anchorage's school district spreading the benefits of dance inside and outside the classrooms. ADT’s Breaking the Ice will engages partiicpants in the creative process to strengthen basic proficiencies by developing dance and body awareness, encouraging creativity and imagination, analytical and abstract thinking as well as interpretation and
problem-solving skills.

Program Descriptions

This program is outlined encompassing five main divisions:

Creative Movement:  introduces youth, ages 3-5, to rhythm, movement and music.  Participants explore the creativity and imagination of early childhood through improvisation while engaging in creative problem solving, growing in cognitive, social and sensitive ways.  Available for on-site programs at your school or program site, or at ADT's studios.  Interested in learning more?  Call 277-9591 to ask about availability and scheduling for your group.

Embracing Movement: 
2012-2013 pilot program with Alaska Native Charter School, grades K-6.  Through movement, dialogue and acceptance students will engage with members of the ADT Company to exchange ideas about traditional Native dance and contemporary dance, discovering connections in a personalized atmosphere, highlighting elements of interrelation while sharing the joys of dance and dissolving the edges of cultural differences. 

Youth on the Move: 
Designed to bring new challenges and experiences to advanced level high school students,
This program consists of  two-week residencies.  Each session begins with one exploratory modern class and one ballet technique class, followed by the direct instruction from ADT Company members to develop their tools for dance appreciation and critical thinking. Including creation of choreography and informal discussions in preparation for a Lab-experience performance at ADT Studios and/or their high school performance venue. ADT offers scholarships to deserving students.

Movement Corp:
Now in its third year, Movement Corp is ADT's mentoring and leadership program for advanced dance students on a trajectory for a career in dance.  This innovative program provides performance opportunities with training in public speaking, fundraising, marketing, productiond design/support and community engagement.  Participants must audition to be admitted int the program.

Moving On:   A pilot program that introduces movement-based terapeutic practices for participants with Parkinsons Disease.  To be launched in the 2012-2013 season.

ARTReach Ticket Program:
This program provides complimentary and/or low-cost tickets to at-rish and underserved members of the community, serving 750-1,000 individuals annually.  Interested in applying for the program?  Send email to info@alaskadancetheatre.org and note "ARTReach Ticket Request" in the Subject line, describe your organization/group, how tickets would benefit your group or event, how many tickets you are requesting and for which Company event.
